Professional Development contribution (5.5 hours) - Workshop fills the criteria of Standards 4, 6, 7 & 10 of the QCT Professional Standards for Queensland Teachers

Nelle Frances has developed an interactive training workshop for health professionals, therapists, teachers and families of children with Asperger's Syndrome.

Her  Sensory Detective Workshop TM highlights an Asperger Childs' response to sensory stimuli in their environment, and how it impacts their behavior, emotional development and their academic progress. Outcomes for participants include being able to:-

  • Identify Sensory Stimuli
  • Identify affected senses
  • Identify indications of sensitivity
  • Recognize sensory agitation
Understand connection between sensory issues + behaviour
  • Establish accommodations for ASD child

This high-impact training session includes a complete description of AS characteristics– using anecdotal examples to “make the pieces fit” the picture of your child. Nelle offers insight into the processing differences and changing perspectives of individuals with Autism and Asperger's, and provides examples of resources and tools for use at home and in the classroom.

You'll learn effective strategies for dealing with the challenging behaviour that is sometimes displayed by AS children and discover why success oriented learning using positive reinforcement works for these children.

Nelle will guide you in using her Ben and His Helmet books within the curriculum and as a tool at home to help the AS child gain the skills required for emotional regulation – self assessment, self monitoring and self management.

What Others Say about the Workshop

I just wanted to THANK YOU for making the time to present your awesome workshop to the Isaac Communities. You truly are a wonderful person that has left my community feeling enriched and informed.  We are all looking forward to having you present another workshop soon.  Kerry

The Interactive workshop is an excellent concept that brilliantly highlights sensory sensitivity – wow! Heather

I came to hear you speak at the library and have never felt more relieved after hearing what you had to say about kids with Asperger’s! You made me feel like it was all going to be OK, gave me strength to work with our son, and we are now at a point where we really enjoy him and all that he is. Thank you for that!  Rebecca

I am just writing to you after attending a workshop with you today at Nambour Community Centre. I took the day off from my teaching role in a community kindergarten today to attend and it was well worth it!

I found the whole workshop to be practical and incredibly interesting! I really appreciated your honest and practical approach when conveying the information. I also really appreciated your honesty about your own experiences as a parent of a child and with a father with ASD, as well as your professional opinion and experience in the special education field.

I always like to hear about the stories of real people and find that it gives topics of relevance much more meaning. I also really appreciated the discussions and information exchanged throughout the workshop by the other participants at the course. I feel that all of this wonderful input helps me as a teacher to get a little more idea and to develop more empathy for the family side of living with ASD. I thought that the group exercise on sensory overload was very, very effective.

I can’t help but imagine how difficult it must be for families to live with a child with ASD as it is such a complex condition, but, at the same time I came out of there being reminded that there is a lot of love and dedication for these children and hard work being done to help them to live full and meaningful lives.

Thanks Nelle for a very inspiring day! I got so much out of it! I will be spreading the word on this great workshop! L.F.

Parents find help at Workshop - THERE were laughs, tears and a peculiar collaboration of noise coming from the Coachman's Inn yesterday as parents, carers, teachers and specialists flocked to the motel for a workshop about dealing with children who have autism and Asperger's syndrome.
