The Ben and His Helmet Books for Asperger's Children
These books improve the way your Asperger Child manages their behaviour.
The Ben and His Helmet series of books are written especially for children with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder.
The series provides insight into the daily life of a student with Asperger's Syndrome within a mainstream classroom setting, while reinforcing classroom practice and procedure for an Asperger child.
ASD children are able to identify with Ben's language, sensory and social difficulties and in connecting with Ben's character they take the first step in self-managing their behaviour.
The books focus on positive solutions and outcomes to the challenges faced by our children with Asperger's Syndrome. e.g. sensory overload; failure to recognize facial expressions; and a literal understanding of language.
Making the connection with Ben's character generates the idea that they could try those problem-solving strategies too. This leads to self-assessment (how am I feeling?), self-monitoring (I feel anxious/angry/agitated) and finally self-management (I need my safe space/time out).
This new-found ability to self monitor/manage their behavior helps your Asperger child to feel in control which reduces the frustration they experience. This helps to reduce meltdowns. |
